CLG DIALOGUE WITH GOVERNMENT ON EDUCATION AND TRAINING

1. CLG organisations are active in the area of education and training for both apprentices and professionals in the construction sector.

2. As an industry group, the CLG is keen to develop dialogue with Government in this area and to facilitate policies that increase skills within the sector in a targeted, efficient and cost-effective way. Many of the member organisations are currently involved in Industry Training Organisations and are in an ideal position to assist government in the delivery of its policies for the sector.

3. The CLG sees itself as working with the Government to:

  • Develop relevant education and training policies for the construction sector;
  • Review and comment on specific strategy changes for the sector; and
  • Offer practical advice in terms of implementation and communication.

4. The CLG wishes to encourage dialogue across a wide range of education and training policy areas, including:

  • The future of unit-standard-based training;
  • The Government's vision for apprenticeships;
  • Technology leadership;
  • Qualifications;
  • The role of tertiary institutions; and
  • Building a safer and more environmentally friendly construction sector.

5. The CLG would like to understand more clearly the role and strategic direction Government is developing in these areas and to offer the CLG as a vehicle by which Government can receive prompt and constructive feedback on proposed changes to education and training for the construction sector.
